Well, Paul Krugman got to me again today in his New York Times Op Ed piece. It is a classic left wing argument that manages to infuriate me every time I see it. His comments suggest that the reason California is in financial crisis is because the Republicans refuse to take responsibility to govern. In short, the fiscal crisis is not the fault of the majority, it is the minority's failure to see the light and agree with the majority.
This brilliant idiot claims that the problem in the state all goes back to the Prop 13 tax revolt. His argument gets even more absurd when he says that the state is now too dependent on income tax instead of property taxes. The typical liberal perspective never questions spending, but always focuses on taxing. This distinction is the classic disconnect between the left and the right. The left assumes that government must do things and tax to do them. The right assumes that government should not do things, and hence attempts to contain taxing to leave the money in the hands of those who create it. This is the essence of the difference: The liberal believes that the wealth creator must share it: the conservative believes that the creator of wealth can share it.
This is the essence of the growing storm in our Republic. Liberty for the liberal has a price: it must be purchased with taxes. For the conservative: liberty is a right, and has no price. The only cost of liberty is the cost of preventing others from stealing it.
