Well, the President did what we would have expected him to do, he nominated a liberal, with his empathetic, aggressive agenda. That said, this justice may be a good as we are going to get from this President. It is clear that she is going to pursue the liberal agenda he wants, and there seems to be little or nothing that can be done by the "weak Republicans" and "Blue Dog Democrats."
That said, I really think that this nomination was a very bright political move by Obama. It will be very difficult for the "party of NO," to fight it, without damaging an already weak position with the Hispanic community. Let us not be naive, this is a political appointment, designed to get votes. Yes, she is a liberal, but it is a two point play: woman and a Hispanic. Obama continues to be very aware of what it will take to get reelected.
Further, the fight over this nominee will bring to the fore the judicial temprament and "standing of the parties" issues. And, it will raise the issue of racial preferences, because she is clear on the side of such preferences, and the public is moving away from that being an acceptablee practice.
The Republicans must fight against the nomination; but must not try to "Bork" her. She has too good a story, and will engender a strong "sympathy vote" for her life story. The Republicans must challenge her on core values and principles, and must make it clear that they oppose her for those.
The Democrats didn't have any problem opposing two conservative Hispanics..Gonzales and Estrada, so I don't think the Republicans need to worry about losing any votes over this. The ones who are against us are going to stay that way. We will make no progress until someone has the guts to talk about policies and how they affect the minorities and how they have been lied to all these years. If the Great Society answers were so great, why haven't trillions of dollars solved the problem? Republicans should say that lower taxes, non-government health care, better schools, less regulation, less labor unions, fewer abortions, etc. affect everyone the same, except that minorites benefit more because of more and better jobs, less government regulation of their lives and lower crime rates.
